THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Senate meeting will resume on October 4 to decide the representative to the search committee for the selection of the new Vice-Chancellor in Kerala university as per the proposal of the Chancellor, the Governor.

As per the Governor's directive, the Senate met on Tuesday, but deliberately ended it without meeting the quorum and thus deceived the Governor. But this has backfired.

The government changed its stance as the Governor was about to take harsh steps like dissolving the Senate and suspending the Vice Chancellor. Dr PP Ajayakumar and left senators who reached the office on Tuesday did not visit the Senate meeting hall. The Governor summoned all the related files and directed to take all possible steps to check the legal aspects. Sensing this, Minister Bindu, who came to inaugurate the exhibition of PVC, announced that the Senate will meet on the November 4.

All 11 senators nominated by the governor were absent from Tuesday's meeting. The Governor has started to take action against them. Among the 11 absentees, lawyer Muralidharan from Kollam and Sports Council representative Balachandran are members of the syndicate. Both will lose their syndicate membership if they are removed from the Senate. The government would like to appoint Ajayakumar as next VC as current VC Dr VP Mahadevan Pillai retires on October 24. If Ajayakumar is suspended, this won’t be possible.

The minister's announcement of the date of the next Senate meeting has become controversial. The Governor also received a complaint. Only the Vice-Chancellor has the power to convene the Senate. The Senate can be convened within a month if requested by one-fourth of the members. The VC can call a meeting at any time voluntarily by giving 7 days’ notice. But the Higher Education Minister, who is the pro-chancellor, has no legal authority to interfere in the administration of the universities. Pro-Chancellor need not check any files.
