TEHRAN: As per reports, at least four people died and 61 were injured in the fire at Evin prison in Iran on Saturday. This is the prison that houses prisoners from the ongoing protests against the regime in Iran. Iran Judiciary website reports that among the injured, condition of four people is very serious. Four people died due to smoke inhalation. But unofficial sources suggest that the death toll is higher. The fire in the jail was brought under control after hours of effort.
In the video footage that surfaced online after the fire, smoke can be heard rising from inside the prison, along with gunshots and explosions. There is also a suspicion that the jail caught fire as part of the protests in connection with the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.
There were reports from media related to Iran's Revolutionary Guard that an explosion was heard from the prison after one of the escaped prisoners stepped on a landmine in the prison premises but this statement was later retracted. Evin Prison is a key prison that houses hundreds of protestors and foreign prisoners.
