KOCHI: The government informed the high court that necessary steps have been taken to bring law against black magic. The court directed the state attorney to submit a report within two weeks regarding the legislation.

In the wake of the Elanthoor human sacrifice, a public interest petition was filed by the Kerala Yukthivadi Sangham seeking legislation to prevent black magic and sorcery. The demand in the petition was to direct the central and state governments to enact legislation. This law has been implemented in the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. According to the petition, similar murders have taken place in Kerala in the past and in this situation, there is an urgent need for legislation to prevent such atrocities. The petition also demanded that the state government be directed to take a decision on the recommendations of the report of the Law Reforms Commission headed by Justice KT Thomas in order to prevent illegal practices.

Recently, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had stated that the government would make a law against superstitions and customs as soon as possible. "Opposing black magic is not against religious belief. There should be people's intervention against superstitions. Mannath Padmanabhan left the caste name back then. Many people are now adding caste names to their children's names.", CM said.
