NEW DELHI: Mallikarjun Kharge was declared the president of Congress, thus becoming the first non-Gandhi to become the party chief in 20 years. Kharge secured nearly eight thousand votes in the president polls. The opposing candidate Shashi Tharoor won 1072 votes. No official announcement has been made yet.

After winning more than ten percent of the votes, Tharoor said that they can move forward together. 9,497 votes in 68 ballot boxes were counted. There were a total of 9915 voters.

At the same time, Rahul Gandhi responded that decisions in the Congress will be taken by the new president. Kharge ji will decide his position in the party, he added.
