In the past, police would not register a case if someone behaves very badly toward women and children. Even society used to view those things as normal. Now the situation has changed. If someone misbehaves with a woman, it is sure that he will be in jail. Therefore, the crimes against women have gone down.
The change in society’s perception and the changes in the laws accordingly have created a situation where women and children are treated better. However, the police force thinks that any new law would not affect them. Recent incidents involving the police have proved this.
In Killikollur, the soldier and his brother had to face unprecedented torture and injustice at the police station. In addition to thrashing them brutally, both the brothers were locked up in jail on trumped-up charges of drug smuggling. According to law books, no police officer has the right to touch their bodies even if they have committed heinous crimes. If it is proved that these brothers were tortured in police custody, there are laws that can prosecute and punish those who are responsible for this.
Beatings and torture are the leftovers of old monarchial, feudal and British-era policing. Some leaders of the police unions have asked whether police officers to kiss those who are arrested for doing violence. In developed countries, the police do not resort to custodial violence to investigate a case. The biggest crime is to put a person in jail and a gang of police officers beating him.
Those police officers who try to save the mango thief and punish innocents by slapping fake drug cases are a shame to the police force. The government must dismiss those police officers who are found to be guilty of the crime.
The job of the police is not to beat. This barbaric act cannot be continued forever. The military has demanded an investigation into the torture of the soldier at Killikollur. If an honest investigation is not done under the leadership of a top police officer, incidents like these will continue.
The police are doing a good job in law and order. However, incidents like ‘Killikollur’ position police officers below than a common criminal. And that is surely a shame.
