NEW DELHI: The state government will file a review petition against the Supreme Court verdict quashing the appointment of Kerala Technical University Vice-Chancellor Dr Rajasree M.S. Rajasree will also file a petition challenging the cancellation of the appointment. The government is planning to file the review petition after taking into account the possibility that the appointments of other VCs may be questioned citing the Supreme Court verdict.

The government will file the review petition after consultation with senior counsel. The verdict of the bench comprising Justice MR Shah and CT Ravikumar stated that the appointment of Rajasree was not in accordance with the UGC rules. But the state government will point out that the UGC rules of 2010 are only directive in nature and that it is not obligated to implement them. The government will also raise the Supreme Court's 2015 judgment that state laws will prevail if UGC rules are not applicable. The government will also question the reference in the judgment regarding the formation of the search committee. The government contends that the search committee for appointing the Technical University VC was constituted on the basis of the law enacted under the UGC Act, 2013.

If a review petition is filed in the Supreme Court, the government can halt the moves against other VCs for the time being by saying that it is a matter under the consideration of the court.
