NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department has warned that the low pressure prevailing in the Andaman Sea will turn into an extreme low pressure and become Cyclone Sitrang in the West Bay of Bengal by tomorrow. It is also reported that Sitrang will cause heavy rains in Bengal and Odisha.
A ban has been imposed on fishing in the central Bay of Bengal and Odisha and Bengal coasts till October 26 due to the possibility of strong winds and rain. The weather department has advised that it is not advisable to go fishing on the coast of Lakshadweep today. It has been informed that Sitrang will turn a cyclone tomorrow morning and will cross the Bangladesh coast the next day. Sitrang is the first cyclone to form in the Bay of Bengal in October since 2018 and the second in 2022.
Meantime, the Central Meteorological Department has informed that there is a possibility of heavy rain at isolated places in the state today. There is also the possibility of strong lightning and wind. Yellow alert has been announced in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram districts. As there is a possibility of wind and bad weather, has asked to be on alert.
