For the past few days what had shaken the conscience of Kerala was the heart-shattering story of two brothers from Kollam district of Kerala. One is 30 yr old Vishnu and the other one is his 25 yr old brother Vignesh. Vishnu is in Indian army and the other one is hardworking youth, dreaming of a govt job. He is also a local DYFI leader.
For no serious fault of theirs, they were dragged into the small torture room inside Kollam Kilikollur police station, made to stand in undergarments, handcuffed and beaten black blue as they would normally do to criminals. The custodial torture was proven in the internal inquiry held after the brothers complained following their release from jail, where they had been in remand for 12 days. You may wonder why they were remanded. The cops who tortured them had managed to falsely implicate them in a criminal case. They had deliberately framed them, accusing them of attacking the police station and injuring the writer there to release some persons arrested in an MDMA case. This also turned out to be a cooked case in the inquiry.
Though the incident happened on August 25, the issue gained media attention only a few days ago. After this Kerala police had been receiving condemnation from all corners. Now many organisations, political parties, military and ex-military men have come out in support of the two brothers and deploring police brutality in very strong terms. Even the military has stared their investigation into the incident.
