NEW DELHI: BCCI on Thursday announced equal pay for both men and women cricketers in India. This is the first such announcement in the history of Indian cricket. Board of Control for Cricket in India's Secretary Jay Shah informed this through a tweet.

"I’m pleased to announce @BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing pay equity policy for our contracted @BCCIWomen cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian Cricket.", Shah tweeted.

Shah thanked the BCCI for supporting this decision. Senior men cricketers get an average of Rs 60,000 as a match fee per match whereas senior women players get an average of Rs 20,000 a day. This huge gap in the pay between male and female players will change when the new announcement comes into force. Before 2022, women players were paid Rs 12,500 as match fee.

According to the announcement, both men and women cricketers will be paid Rs 15 lakh for Tests, Rs 6 lakh for one-day internationals and Rs 3 lakh for T20 internationals.
