KANNUR: Kannur University has passed a resolution against the Governor. The university syndicate passed the resolution as Governor Arif Muhammad Khan demanded the resignation of the vice-chancellors of state universities including Kannur university. In the resolution, the syndicate pointed out that the Governor's request for the resignation of the VCs was part of a move to curb the growth of the universities. The syndicate also assessed that the policies of the Governor are against the university rules.
The Governor had sent a letter to the Chief Minister demanding Finance minister KN Balagopal’s resignation citing that the minister had lost his pleasure to continue in the office. The action was based on the warning given on the 17th that if the governor was insulted, he would withdraw his pleasure to ministers. At a program held at the Kariyavattom campus the next day, Balagopal gave a speech highlighting the issues in UP. The Governor had instructed Raj Bhavan officials to collect reports of this speech in Malayalam and English newspapers on the same day. He also asked to prepare English translation of Malayalam reports. Reports and videos of speeches delivered by Ministers R Bindu and P Rajeev were also collected. Matters including administration of universities in Uttar Pradesh and UGC regulations applicable to all universities in the country have been collected. The Governor also interacted with South Indians who were VCs in UP universities. He sought legal advice from senior SC lawyers by sending English translation of Balagopal’s speech. He also collected judgement of Governor’s displeasure case against Azam Khan in Uttar Pradesh in 2015. The letter to CM was prepared after all this.
