KOTTAYAM: African Swine Flu has been confirmed in Meenachil panchayat in Kottayam. The sale of pork has been banned in the area following the confirmation of the disease. An area of one kilometer around infected pig farms has been declared as an infected area. Pigs within a 10 km radius of the infected farms will be strictly monitored.
District Collector Dr. PK Jayashree, who is the Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, informed that precautionary measures have been taken in the district. The supply of pork from the affected areas and the operation of the supplying shops have been suspended. Authorities have directed to stop the transportation of pigs, pig meat and fodder from the infected area to other areas of the district and from other places to the infected area. The District Animal Welfare Officer has been directed to take steps to cull all pigs within one km radius of the infected farms and to bury carcasses by maintaining safety measures.
