THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Intelligence Bureau began monitoring the protest led by the Latin Archdiocese three weeks ago. IB officials were present at the project area, secretariat and every other spot where the strike committee organised protests.
The IB collected the figures on losses incurred and details of those whose travels got cancelled on the day of the road blockade by the strike committee. When the strike spread to Muthalappozhy, that place was also put under surveillance. Following this, Trivandrum Chamber of Commerce and Industry President S.N Raghuchandran Nair complained to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Some other complaints were also forwarded by the Ministry of Home Affairs to IB. Subsequently, ten voluntary organizations and individuals who indirectly supported the port strike were placed under surveillance.
The Latin Church have a disagreement with the government for appointing a committee to study coastal erosion without including a representative of fishermen. The Latin Church also opposes the government's order to study the problems in Muthalappozhy. Although the government has issued an order for the rehabilitation of fishermen and rented houses for those living in warehouses, the Latin Archdiocese is claiming that its demand was not accepted.
