If city roads are not developed along with the increasing traffic congestion, the result will be suffocating traffic jams. This is the biggest traffic problem that all the major cities and towns of Kerala are facing today. There are many limitations in developing roads in towns. The thing to be done to reduce traffic congestion is to build flyovers or underpasses at busy junctions and congested areas. Objections to this too are common. However, if the authorities have a will, they can move ahead with development by facing opposition. The first thing is to convince the people of the importance and necessity of the project and gain their support.

The demand for a flyover at Attakulangara Junction, one of the busiest places in Thiruvananthapuram, is decades old. After a long wait, the idea has recently reached the implementation level. However, when the officials came up with the plan without doing enough homework and assessing the future, protests and opposition arose from the local residents. It seems that the planners did not think about the potential consequences of demolishing the many houses on heritage street and trying to build a flyover over them. In any case, there are indications that the government will give in to the opposition of the local residents. Authorities are currently looking for alternatives. They should have done it earlier. These are the disasters that naturally occur when urban planning is handled by people who lack foresight.

It is necessary to speed up measures to decongest the capital's severe traffic jams. Sreekaryam, Peroorkada and Eenchakkal are the three centers that cause a headache to motorists. It is imperative that flyovers come as soon as possible in all these three places. Nothing has been done over the past few years to make it a reality. Among these, the Sreekaryam flyover has somehow reached close to becoming a reality. It may soon enter the construction stage. At least two decades have passed since efforts were initiated to make it a reality. Even now, the Peroorkada and Eanchakkal flyovers still remain only on paper. Authorities are only making assurances from time to time.

The flyover, built to solve the traffic jam in Kazhakkoottam, is set to be opened for traffic by the middle of next month. With the arrival of the longest skyway in the state, there is going to be a big change in the transport systems. Vehicular traffic in and out of the city will be much smoother. Along with this, flyovers have to come up at Sreekaryam, Peroorkada and Eanchakkal. The traffic congestion will continue if these flyovers do not materialize at the earliest. It is not difficult to complete the construction of flyovers in a timely manner in these days when construction techniques have progressed a lot. The authorities only need to come forward for that.
