NEW DELHI: The Supreme court has directed to take strict action against those who conduct two finger-test to victims of sexual assault. The court also observed that the two finger-test re-victimises the rape survivors.

Stating that the test has no scientific basis, the court directed to remove it from the curriculum of medical colleges. The order was declared from a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Hima Kohli.

The two-finger test is also called as virginity test is done by inserting two fingers into the vaginal canal of the rape survivor to check the laxity of her muscles and determine if she has been sexually active or not. The court also observed that it is unfortunate that this test which has no scientific basis is still continuing.

The Supreme Court also pointed out that the sexual history of the survivor is irrelevant in rape cases. The court directed the central and state governments to ensure that two-finger test is not conducted.
