tj-chandrachoodan

The demise of RSP leader TJ Chandrachoodan is a big loss for the Left politics and the general public. Kerala has lost a level-headed leader who upheld a principled commitment to left-wing positions. Chandrachoodan, who started as a student worker of RSP, rose to become the National General Secretary through his work excellence. Chandrachoodan had open openly expressed his opinions without any doubt on what position the Left should take on many issues arising at the national level. He also stood firm on his stance without risking his own personality for the sake of any position. Therefore, it cannot be ignored that he lost many high positions. However, that didn't dent his leftist feelings.

When at least some of the senior leaders embraced deviations that did not suit the Left, Chandrachoodan was never averse to reacting against them through stances and speeches. He was a leader who made significant contributions to the Left on many occasions. Born and brought up in Pettah, he showed the zeal to openly oppose the leftist shift of the CPM. Even though the RSP itself had to leave the Left Front due to the displeasure of many people, the relevance of TJ Chandrachoodan's words only increased. He was also able to take a strong stance against communalism by always upholding secularism. He did journalism for a few days at Kaumudi under the tutelage of K Balakrishnan. He had gained the lessons of working for the good of society regardless of favor or disfavor from there. He was able to carry this throughout his life in public life.

Chandrachoodan, who joined the RSP through student politics, passed his B.A and M.A exams with rank. In 1969, he became a teacher at Sasthamcotta Devaswom Board College. He resigned from his job in 1987 and became a full-time party worker. In 1999 he became the state secretary of the RSP. It is also an open secret that he lost his Rajya Sabha seat due to internal politics within his own party. But that did not dent his commitment to his party or the Left. He passed away while leading a retired life due to health issues. He had served as a member of PSC and editor of Pravaaham biweekly. He contested for the Legislative Assembly twice. His books 'K Balakrishnan Malayalathinte Genius' and 'Marxism Ennal Enthu' contain remarkable observations. In his book, he argued with reason, that mistake committed by Marx was that he focused only on the labourers without taking into account the impact of future machines and technology. It was an observation that shed light on the timely changes the Left needed to make. We share with his family and colleagues in mourning the loss of TJ, who was always closely associated with Kerala Kaumudi.
