AHMEDABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Morbi in Gujarat on Tuesday after the cable suspension bridge claimed the lives of at least 135 people. The search and rescue operation is underway in the Machchhu river. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was also with him. Modi also visited the Morbi Civil Hospital where the injured were admitted. Patel thanked the Prime Minister for providing timely assistance.
At least 135 people, including women and children, were killed and over 100 are receiving treatment for their injuries sustained after a cable suspension bridge in Morbi town collapsed on Sunday, plunging people into the Machchhu River. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting at Raj Bhavan, Gandhinagar, on Monday to review the situation in Morbi.
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the Morbi bridge collapse was a result of massive corruption. Speaking at a press conference, he asked why the construction of the bridge was entrusted to a watch manufacturing company that had no experience in bridge construction.
As per reports, the bridge was closed for about 8 months for maintenance and the repair work was being completed by a private agency. Gujarat government has constituted a five-member committee headed to probe the bridge collapse incident. Nine persons including officials of Oreva, the company that renovated the bridge, ticket sellers and security men have been arrested for the Morbi bridge collapse.
