ADELAIDE: It was Virat Kohli’s day at Adelaide Oval when he scripted history to become the highest run scorer in the ICC T20 World Cup. With his 64 runs spree in today’s match, Kohli beat Sri Lankan legend, Mahela Jayawardene’s 1016 runs record.
The star cricketer bagged his record from 23 innings spread over 25 matches played in all of the ICC T20 World Cup series. He holds an impressive average of 88.75.
Team India held down a tough Bangladesh batting to secure a five-run win in the Twenty20 World Cup. A revised target of 151 runs within 16 overs was set owing to rains. However, India was able to put a stop to Bangladeshi hopes at 145 runs for six wickets.
With this close victory, Indian hopes to enter the semis have been lifted. Virat Kohli remained not-out and scored 64 runs out of 44 balls.
The Bangladeshi side gave a fighting performance with Litton Das scoring 60 runs, Nurul Hasan remained not out and scoring 25 runs, and Najmul Hossain 21 runs.
From the Indian bowling side Hardik Pandya took 2 wickets in 3 overs and gave away 28 runs and Arshdeep Singh grabbed 2 wickets in four overs and gave 38 runs.
Bangladesh began its innings on a positive note with Litton Das battering the Indian side. He scored 7 fours and 3 sixes in just 27 balls. During the 8th over Litton Das was packed off by a great direct throw from Rahul.
After Litton Das’s dismissal, the Indian side began picking up wickets at regular intervals. Taskin Ahmed and Nurul Hassan led the final onslaught against India. However, their dreams of victory were cut down with 5 more runs to win.
Bangladesh, which had won the toss, earlier, sent India to batting. India lost its captain Rohit Sharma earlier on with just two runs. However, KL Rahul performed well in today’s game and took a half-century in just 31 balls. Following, his exit Suryakumar Yadav began raising the run rate for India. After the entry of Kohli, runs began to pour in. However, at the 116th ball, Suryakumar was dismissed.
Later India lost three wickets within a short span with Pandya (5), Karthik (5), and Akshar Patel (7) quickly exiting the ground.
However, Kohli continued his batting spree and in the last over was joined by Ashwin (13 not out) to take the runs bagged at an impressive 184.
Bangladeshi young pace bowler, Hasan Mahmud, took 3 wickets after giving away 47 runs. Their captain, Shakib Al Hassan took 2 wickets and gave away 47 runs.
