THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The show cause notices issued by the governor, who is also the chancellor, to the vice-chancellors of various universities in the state, will end today. The Governor had asked the vice chancellors to reply to his notice by 5 pm on November 3. Only retired Kerala University vice chancellor V P Mahadevan Pillai has given an explanation to the notice. It is heard that the other VCs will not give an explanation as they have approached the high court against the reply saying that their appointment was as per the rules.

The Governor issued a show cause notice stating that their appointments were also illegal after the Supreme Court quashed the appointment of Technical University VCs after assessing that they were not as per rules. The vice chancellors of Kerala, MG, CUSAT, Fisheries, Kannur, Kalady aladi, Calicut, Malayalam and Technical University were issued notices. Though the deadline for reply ends today, time has been given till November 7 to file a direct explanation. Therefore, there will be further action by the governor after that.

Meantime, Justice Devan Ramachandran, who considered the pleas of the eight vice-chancellors challenging the notice issued by the governor, sought an explanation from the opposite parties including the governor. The plea will be considered again today.

Pointing out that the Governor has no right to cancel the appointment made in compliance with the rules, Kerala University's former VC Dr V P Mahadevan Pillai, M G University V C Dr Sabu Thomas, Cusat VC Dr K N Madhusoodanan, KUFOS VC Dr K Riji John, Kaladi University VC Dr M V Narayanan, Calicut VC Dr M K Jayaraj, Malayalam University VC Dr V Anil Kumar and Kannur University VC Dr Gopinath Raveendran filed the pleas.
