KOCHI: The Kerala High Court said that if there are irregularities in the appointment of vice chancellors, it will not stand. The court said the chancellor has an obligation to reply to the Supreme Court. The court passed an interim order on the plea flied by the vice chancellors against the show cause notice.
The court extended the time till 5 pm on Monday to reply to the show cause notice served by the Governor. The court also granted time to the Governor to file a counter affidavit. The Governor informed the court that presently two VCs have responded. The court also decided to consider the pleas again on Tuesday.
The vice-chancellors informed that the Governor's notice to resign had been cancelled earlier. Since the first notice was cancelled, the second notice could not be sent as it was not complied with. The vice chancellors argued that even if there is a mistake in the appointment of the vice chancellor, the chancellor has no power to correct it. The court asked the chancellor implemented only the Supreme Court judgement. The high court also mentioned that the chancellor can intervene as per the court order.
Seven people including former Kerala University V C Mahadevan Pillai, approached the high court. The petitioners said the Governor's action is not legal. However, the high court asked the petitioners to reply to the Governor's notice. The Governor asked the nine VCs to resign within 24 hours based on the Supreme Court's order dismissing the vice chancellor of the technical university for non-compliance with the UGC rules.
