THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Preraks or motivators who were working under the general education department’s literacy mission have been transferred to the local body department and their salaries have been blocked for the last three months.
The motivators salaries were increased in March this year. The government has given three months to the local body department to take decision on the service and salaries. But that file is stuck at the finance department.
The finance department has said that their salary must be arranged by the local body department. Following this, 1800 employees are facing difficulties. If the decision is not made then the Kerala Saksharatha Prerak Association (KSPA) will go on strike next week.
The service of these motivators to make Kerala 100% literate have been very crucial. However, they work on a meagre salary of Rs.3000 to Rs. 6000. In 2017 the salary was revised but they got it only for three months. After that majority of the Preraks or motivators were given the earlier salary.
Till July last their salaries were give through literacy mission. They are the ones who must conduct the New India Literacy program under the leadership of local bodies.
