THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Governor, who issued show cause notices to ten VCs in Kerala in the context of the Supreme Court's decision that UGC terms should be used as the criteria for the appointment of vice-chancellors, is likely to take steps to sack them. This is against the backdrop of the VCs coming up with their explanations on the show-cause notices.
The governor will conduct a hearing of all 10 VCs. Following this, he will issue a notification cancelling the appointment stating the reasons. Meanwhile, the petition filed by the VCs questioning the governor's action is under consideration by the High Court. The High Court order said that the VCs can continue until the Governor, who is the Chancellor, takes a final decision.
Ten VCs along with lawyers can reach Raj Bhavan for the hearing. The governor will allot time for two VCs in a day. The governor will be sacking the VCs in the same model as he sacked 15 senate members of the Kerala University and issued a notification.
The governor had sent show cause notices to the VCs of Kerala, MG, Calicut, Fisheries, CUSAT, Sanskrit, Technical, Kannur, Malayalam, Open and Digital Universities asking them for reasons not to dismiss them. He withdrew the notice given to Techincal University VC as the Supreme Court sacked the VC. The remaining 10 have given explanations to the governor. Although Kerala University VC Dr V. P. Mahadevan Pillai retired on October 24, the Governor can revoke the appointment.
All the VCs replied that they were qualified and there was no violation of the rules in their appointment. They also said that they were not responsible for the appointment made by the Governor on the recommendation of the search committee.
