The Education Department has started the procedures to revise the school curriculum in the state. It has been more than a decade since the last reform was introduced. Learning and its methods need to change with time and changing needs. New textbooks will be prepared after considering the opinion of the children. The new approach is essential and entirely novel. Authorities have decided to set aside a period in all schools on November 17 to listen to the opinions and suggestions of children on curriculum reform. This is the first time in the history of the state that the authorities are seeking the opinions of children on this matter. Subjects related to education are usually considered the domain of experts and academic scholars only. Whether the reforms are good or bad, no one cares about the opinions of children who have to be victims of the reform. This model is undergoing a change now. Teachers will seek the opinion of the children by preparing a questionnaire on each subject in the classes. The schools will collect the opinions of the children and forward them to SCERT. The new textbooks will be prepared after considering the suggestions of the children. The textbooks of classes one, three, five, seven, nine and eleven will be revised first. It will be implemented in 2024. The reform process will be completed in 2025-26 with the renewal of textbooks of other classes as well.

When thinking about curriculum reform, the first thing to consider is the heavy study load that children face today. Although the horizon of knowledge can be said to be vast, it is cruel to impose such a huge load on children from a very young age. Unfortunately, most of the children who come out after twelve years of schooling have no knowledge or interest in anything related to daily life. The greatest shortcoming of the country's education policy is that no due consideration is given to the interests of children at the school level.

Patriotism, knowledge of the constitution, responsibility towards society and caution not to fall into evil are qualities that should be developed in children right from the school level.

As the influence of politics is intruding into the education sector as well, NCERT is reducing subjects like history and social science under the pretext of simplification of the syllabus. This has caused great controversy in recent times. These changes are mainly seen n the books of classes 11, and 12. Education Minister Sivankutty has clarified that Kerala will not follow the central decision anyway. Although the textbooks in Kerala will continue to have history sections omitted by NCERT, it has been decided not to include questions from these sections in the exam. No matter what kind of reforms are introduced, the new textbooks should be such that the children are not overburdened.
