KOLLAM: Preparation of outline for fuel exploration in the Kollam coast has started under the leadership of a private agency. Exploration involves drilling wells up to five thousand meters deep in the deep sea. The outline of these wells is prepared.
Fuel potential will be tested by running massive pipelines into wells. A delegation of Oil India Limited and their sub-contractors, contracted by the Director General of Hydrocarbons for exploration, visited Kollam Port a few days ago.
Although the outline is getting ready, the start of exploration is likely to take up to a year. If the presence of fuel is found, mining will start within six months. Oil India Limited has signed a contract with the Director General of Carbon for exploration in 17 oil potential blocks along the coast from Kanyakumari to Ernakulam.
A huge iron platform will be installed in the deep sea for the well construction. A huge ship with sophisticated systems will be anchored in this area for surveillance and supervision. Tugs will be around to keep fishing boats, yachts and boats away from this ship and to deliver fuel to the ship and food and drinking water to the crew. During the exploration, the supply of fuel and food to the ship by tugs will be centred at the Kollam port. Kollam port will also store huge pipelines used for exploration.
Preparations for exploration are being made at the Kollam Port in the hope that the service will be available at a lower cost than the larger ports.
