The incident in which two relatives were stabbed to death in an attack by a drug gang in Thalassery is a proof of the ignorance of the growing drug mafia. Son of Khalid murdered was attacked and injured the previous day. This was in the name of questioning the sale of ganja. Khalid and his brother-in-law, who were with the youth in the hospital, were called outside by the drug peddlers. The conversations between them resulted in a clash and then led to the murders.
Ganja and drugs are easily available far and wide in the state today. The gangs involved in drug trafficking and sales are rampant everywhere. Despite the efforts of the police and excise to prevent the drug trade, the sale is in full swing. Nearly 4423 people involved in deadly drug trafficking and sale were caught in the last one month and 4169 cases have been registered. The law enforcers are also testifying that the cases caught are not even a percent of the real ones. The regular users of intoxicants include minors. There is a law to close the shop if found selling intoxicants in the premises of the school. However, we have not heard of any such action taken anywhere. There are reports that the use of drugs is increasing even among school children. It should be seen seriously that despite the government's action plan and strict measures, the drug peddlers are not being able to be booked.
When the sale and use of ganja and all other intoxicants continue to be out of control, the government has increased the sales tax by four percent and increased the price of all foreign liquor. With this, the sales tax on alcohol has risen to 251 percent. The government thinks that since alcohol is not an essential commodity and does not have to be given any perks, it does not matter how much the price is increased. However, there is no thinking on how it affects the society and the families. A K Antony banned the arrack sale to prevent poor workers from spending all their wages at the shop. Trafficking and sale of intoxicants in the state really started to rise when arrack was banned all at once without evaluating the consequences. When those addicted to alcohol could not get it at a cheap price, they went for cheaper intoxicants. Later when Oommen Chandy Government closed the bars all at once, the sale of intoxicants was widespread. Though all the bars closed opened later, intoxicants and drugs are used extensively in the state.
