SINGAPORE CITY: An Indian youth in Singapore has been sentenced to six months jail for starting a fire outside the apartment of his former girlfriend’s fiancé. He has been identified as Surenthiran Sugumaran. He had confessed to the crime in last October.
After finding that his former girlfriend was getting married, he was filled with anger and jealousy. Through an Instagram post on March 11, he found that she was getting married. In a fit of rage, he decided to start a fire to cause inconvenience.
He was dressed in a black hoodie, covered his face so that he could not be identified in CCTV, he went to the victim’s block on the 13th storey in the lift. He started the fire after locking the gate of the apartment. When the victim found his gate locked and shoes burnt the next day, he called the police.
Surenthiran’s six-month jail term was imposed on the grounds that his actions would affect the safety of other residents of the apartment. Those who commit such a crime can be imprisoned for up to seven years in Singapore.
