NEW DELHI: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the country's economy has recorded rapid growth. But the Finance Minister criticized the opposition MPs and said in the Lok Sabha that some people in Parliament are jealous of the country's growing economy.
She was responding to Congress MP Anmula Revanth Reddy’s question pointing out the that the Indian rupee has collapsed against the dollar. He had asked whether the government has taken note of the fact that the Indian currency has hit ₹83 per US dollar for the first time ever. “Everyone should be proud of India's growth but some people take it as a joke,” replied Nirmala Sitharaman.
The opposition MP also quoted Narendra Modi's tweet against former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram in 2013. Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat back then. He tweeted that "Indian Rupee is in ICU". Reddy then asked whether any steps had been taken to save the Indian rupee from the ICU.
“The Indian rupee has been strong against every currency. Reserve Bank has used foreign exchange reserves that it has to intervene in the market to make sure that the Dollar-Rupee fluctuation does not go too much,” Sitharaman replied.
