THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The bill to remove the governor from the post of chancellor was tabled in the assembly. The resolution to take the bill for consideration was presented by Law Minister P Rajeev. The bill left to the subject committee will be discussed and passed today. The proposal in the bill is to replace the governor with prominent educationists as chancellors. In the absence of a VC, the charge would be given to the Pro VC or VCs of other universities.

The opposition is of the stand of a single chancellor for all universities. A retired Supreme Court judge or the chief justice of the high court should become the Chancellor. A special committee should be formed for the appointment. The panel should include the chief minister, opposition leader and chief justice of the high court. The stand of the opposition is that the chancellor should be appointed according to the majority opinion of the committee.
