THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The assembly passed the bill to remove the governor from the chancellor post of all 14 universities in the state. All procedures for exercising the powers of the assembly have been completed at present. However, the governor has to sign it to become legal.
The government approved two amendments of the opposition. The ruling party accepted two opposition amendments like a separate panel for the appointment of the chancellor and the chancellor and pro-chancellor to act in place of the decision-maker in the absence of the chancellor. Both sides agreed that apart from the chief minister and opposition leader, the speaker could replace the chief justice of the high court, in the panel to appoint the chancellor. However, a dispute broke out between the opposition and the ruling party on who should replace the governor from the post of chancellor. The opposition continued to insist that retired judges should be the chancellor but the government did not accept this. The opposition boycotted the assembly then. Minister P Rajeev told the opposition that history will not forgive. Following that, the assembly passed the bill.
