BRUSSELS: Following Morocco's defeat to France in the semi-finals of FIFA World Cup in Qatar, fans carrying Moroccan flags threw fireworks at police near Brussels South station and set fire to garbage bags and cardboard boxes. When it became clear that the violence would escalate, the protesters were dispersed with water cannons and tear gas. The police have taken many people into custody and said that strong action will be taken against them. It is not clear whether anyone including the police was injured in the violence. Around 100 people were part of the violent demonstration in the streets.
Defending champions France book their spot in the finals for the second time in a row in the football World Cup after beating the 'dark horse' Morocco in the semi-finals. France took the lead early through Theo Hernandez's goal in the 5th minute of the match, and Kolo Muani's goal in the 79th minute sealed the 'Les Blues' victory. France will face Lionel Messi's Argentina in Sunday's final at the Lusail stadium.
