THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Procedure to dismiss criminal police officer PR Sunu, who is accused in many criminal cases including gang rape, has been initiated. The DGP has sent show cause notice to the inspector, who has faced fifteen department level actions against him.

In the show cause notice, the police chief has asked if there are any reasons not to dismiss him. Sunu is expected to reply to it in three days.

In the show cause notice, the DGP has outlined every accusation and the actions taken against PR Sunu. Action was taken against the officer last January, in the face of investigation, for raping a dalit girl. The DGP using his special power reviewed the action to stall his promotion and converted it into dismissal. The show cause notice is the last procedure before issuing formal dismissal order.

While Sunu was serving as the Beypore Coastal Inspector, he was accused by the victim of a gang rape case, registered at Thrikkakara police station. He was in suspension after being accused in the case.

Accusations were raised against the police force and the home ministry after police officers involved in serious criminal activities getting promotions after facing mild departmental action. Following this accusation, the police force is trying to save its face by dismissing officers involved in serious criminal cases.

The DGP has constituted a special council for a final close examination of the list of 85 police officers with criminal charges which was prepared after a preliminary examination. It is reported that the police officer involved in stealing mangoes in Idukki and a police officer involved in stealing gold in Ernakulam are facing dismissal procedures after the police chiefs of those districts have initiated proceedings against them.
