KOCHI: The Syro Malabar Church Synod had taken the decision one year back on the uniform holy communion. But it was opposed by majority of the priests and laity of the Ernakulam Angamaly Diocese and this has led to the lock down of St. Mary’s Basilica Cathedra on the eve of Christmas. The opposition is in defiance of the ultimatum given by Pope Francis.
The Synod meeting that ended on October 31, 2021 had decided to reform the holy communion. It was to be implemented by November 28. Because of stiff opposition it was not implemented at Ernakulam Angamaly diocese.
In March 22, 2022 Pope Francis had given the ultimatum that it must be implemented by October 31, 2022. However, the priests were not ready to implement it. The reformed holy communion was held only in one church under the Ernakulam Angamaly diocese.
The Synod appointed Arch Bishops Mathew Mulakattu, Mathew Pamblani, and Bishop Jose Chituparambil to hold talks with the priests. Once the Apostolic Administrator of the diocese, Arch Bishop Andrews Thazhath hardened the stance, the priests and the laity also toughened their resolve.
Father Anthony Puthuveli was appointed as Administrator over and above the priest of the St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica. On 20th of the month, the attempt of Father Anthony Puthuveli to conduct the reformed holy communion was opposed by those who support the holy communion facing the congregation. Following this the holy communion facing the congregation was conducted.
The attempt to conduct the reformed holy communion on Christmas at any cost has led to the quarrel getting out of hand.
As the Basilica is now temporarily locked, there would be disciplinary action against the priests who refuse to conduct the reformed holy communion. Church sources say that the action will be taken against the priest for violating their vow of obedience by not following the decision of the Synod and the order of the Pope.
