IDUKKI:The PSC says that nothing can be done in the incident in which a tribal youth was denied government job due to a protruding teeth. The PSC's stance is that it requires an amendment to the provisions (Special Rules) of the Kerala Public Services Act for candidates with buck teeth to be able to get a job in the uniform. PSC sources said that such a policy decision is to be taken by the government in consultation with various departments and PSC won’t approach the government with a demand to amend appointment provisions.
Muthu, a tribal youth, was denied Beat Forest officer post, which was only for tribals, because of protruding teeth. Muthu, a candidate from Anavayi hamlet in Attappadi, had cleared the written test in September followed by the physical efficiency test. But Muthu was not offered the government job as the medical certificate issued by the doctor after the fitness test mentioned about his buck teeth.
The PSC has stated that for years protruding teeth is included as a physical defect which will result in disqualification and the only solution is to amend the provisions. But Minister AK Saseendran's response was that it is the PSC that sets the provisions and the Forest Department is helpless in this case.
At the same time, after the incident became news, the SC/ST Commission filed a case in the matter. The commission has directed that the principal secretary of forest and wildlife, the principal chief conservator and the PSC secretary to give an explanation within a week.
