NAYPYIDAW: A military court in Myanmar sentenced the country's ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi to additional seven years in prison on corruption charges, with her total jail term extending to 33 years.

The court found Suu Kyi guilty of corruption in relation to the purchase, repair and rental of a helicopter for use during natural disasters and state affairs, including rescues and emergencies.

The 33 years in jail includes three years of hard labour, which essentially means she could spend the rest of her life behind bars.
Suu Kyi has previously been convicted of multiple offenses, including electoral fraud and receiving bribes.

However, Suu Kyi has denied all of the charges levied against her, and her lawyers claim they are politically motivated.

Suu Kyi is a former democratically-elected leader. She has been under house arrest since a military ousted her government in a coup in February 2021.
