THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The court has directed that Oommen Chandy should pay court expenses to VS Achuthanandan in the defamation case. Thiruvananthapuram District Court's direction to cover costs came after staying sub-court judgment in favour of Oommen Chandy. The sub court had ruled in favour of Oommen Chandy in the defamation case filed against him for the remark made by VS in the solar case. VS then approached the district court questioning the verdict to pay over Rs 10 lakh in compensation. Then the district court stayed the implementation of the lower court verdict. In the judgment copy of the same case, it is mentioned that Oommen Chandy should bear the court expenses of VS Achuthanandan.
During a channel interview on July 6, 2013, VS Achuthanandan had said that Oommen Chandy was behind the solar company and that Oommen Chandy had embezzled crores using Saritha Nair. In 2014, Oommen Chandy filed a defamation case against him citing his remarks during the Lok Sabha elections. As the allegations in the interview could not be proved during the trial, the court ordered the senior CPM leader to pay Rs 10,10,000. Due to health problems, VS could not attend the court in person during the proceedings.
VS filed an appeal in the district court against the judgment to pay compensation citing the errors in the case. Oommen Chandy could not produce the original copy of the interview before the court. Then the district court overturned the judgment of the sub court.
