THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The bill to remove the governor from the chancellor post of state universities might be sent to the President. Governor Arif Mohammad Khan has hinted about this. He said that those who are above him should take decision on the bill. He welcomed the government's decision for policy announcement and said that he has never interfered in the working of the government.
Meanwhile, except for the Chancellor's Bill, the Governor had signed all the 16 bills passed by the last assembly session today. The Governor had earlier sought legal advice on the Chancellor Bill. Raj Bhavan's move is to conduct a detailed examination of the bill. The governor has also sought UGC’s opinion.
The governor’s stance was that as education is included in the concurrent list, the state cannot take a decision on its own. Khan had earlier stated a quick decision won’t be taken on the Chancellor bill. The bill will be sent to the President after legal advice and consultation with constitutional experts. If left for the President's consideration, there is no possibility of an immediate decision on the bill.
The bill, which was passed by the assembly on December 13, was sent to the governor on the 22nd. The government had handed over the bill to the Raj Bhavan after nine days.
