THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The recent controversies over the bad practices of some student and youth organization leaders had tarnished the reputation of the CPM in the Thiruvananthapuram district. This prompted the party leadership to speed up the district secretary election which had been delayed for nearly 10 months. V Joy was selected as the new district secretary of the CPM soon after the leadership took action against some student and youth organization leaders as part of rectifying mistakes. The name of Anavoor Nagappan, who was the district secretary, was also mired in controversies. The CPM is hoping that the well-known face of V Joy, who won from the Varkala constituency for the second time in a row, will help it recover from the recent dent in its image.
Even ten months after the state conference, Anavoor Nagappan had continued to be the district secretary. This had led to several discussions.
Even though the names of several leaders circulated, some people think that the delay in the election was caused by the failure to come to a consensus. Anavoor reached the state secretariat through the Kochi conference because of the party's scintillating victory in the Thiruvananthapuram district in the 2021 assembly elections. However, the recent controversies in the party and some and its youth organizations put the CPM on the defensive.
CPM was tormented by the Thiruvananthapuram Mayor's letter row and the bad practices of some DYFI and SFI leaders. The district leadership of the party was forced to take strict action against some SFI and DYFI leaders following the stern instructions of the state leadership.
