KANNUR: The much-touted "operation Kubera" has crumbled down completely with usurers heading back again in their cruel best trying to regain power through illegal lending of money. Big talks happened three years ago citing reforms to facelift "operation Kubera", but no real effort was put in place. But now, Talks of reforms have resurfaced with reports saying that the home ministry has prepared a list of usurers and also deployed squads to monitor their business.
All three members of a family in Kadinamkulam committed suicide on Friday after finding it impossible to pay back money to usurers. In 2014, on a similar note, 5 members of a family killed themselves in fear of facing the mafia gangs that act as usurers, which eventually paved way for Operation Kubera to come into existence. In the last 10 years, 2500 usurers were arrested and almost 8 crores were seized.
