TRIVANDRUM: A dedicated social life that voiced fiercely for women chiseled the leader in P K Sreemathy. The Kannur revolutionary will be the first Keralite in 25 years to become the president of AIDWA. The 73-year-old Sreemathy was the vice president of the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) and now got assigned to the president's post.
Known for her solid stands on issues that seldom catch the eye of other politicians, Sreemathy once echoed with vigor the needs of secluded tribals of muthanga which finally got accepted by the government. The inspiring fight saw 12 days of fasting by Sreemathy that got into the annals of Kerala politics.
In 2001, for the very first, Sreemathy took her first steps into the legislative assembly after clinching a win in the Payyanur constituency. After a successive win in 2006, she got credited with the health portfolio and became the minister for the first time. In the illustrative 10 years, Sreemathy gained the admiration of both the opposition and the party alike. While being the health minister, she started a rare trend of visiting the impoverished ones directly, with no uppity of a minister. The Kannur native transcended to her ferocious best while being in opposition, trying to sniggle out every major corruption case to public light. From 2014 to 2019, she served as a Lok Sabha member from Kannur.
A teacher by profession, P K Sreemathy served in the Neruvambram school till 2003, where she retired as the headmistress.
