TRIVANDRUM: A revision in power tariffs is in the talks after Kerala looks ready to adopt centre government's new electricity guidelines that will see the monthly electricity rates wavering. If imposed, the power tariff will soon see the fate of petrol and cooking gas that has skyrocketed to such a rate affecting the common man’s life.

The new power tariff will see an increase during the summer season while the rates will fall during monsoon. The decisive meeting chaired by State Electricity Minister K Krishnankutty also saw KSEB chairman Dr. Rajan N Khobragade IAS, K R Jyothilala, and other board directors joining. After the meeting, the minister confirmed that the policy will be adopted within 3 months in Kerala.

The revision in power tariffs will be done after careful deliberation with proper guidelines to not make the weaker sections of society suffer. A special regulatory commission will be assigned the work of creating a new set of guidelines.

According to the centre's electricity authority guidelines, the normal rate and the surcharge to be levied in case of buying from outside will be decided by the power distribution companies that the government relies upon. A yearly audit with the approval of the regulatory commission is stated mandatory.

In Kerala, during monsoon, the power usage normally falls enabling the government to buy just 50% of power from outside. While in summer the usage hits high forcing the government to buy 75% of power. The summer mostly gets extended to four months in Kerala which will sure make life tough for commoners.
