KAVARATTI: A district sessions court here sentenced Lakshadweep MP Mohammad Faizal to 10 years in prison for attempting to murder a Congress worker. Four people including Faizal, his brother and two have been found guilty. He was convicted for assaulting and seriously injuring Mohammad Saliha, a Congress worker, in a clash during the 2009 election.
A dispute over the construction of a shed led to the conflict. In a case with 32 accused, Mohammad Faizal is named the second accused. Mohammad Saliha is the husband of former Union Minister and Congress leader PM Sayeed's daughter.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Faizal's lawyer said that he will approach the High Court today seeking a stay against the imprisonment sentence.
