NEW DELHI: Raids were happening for one month non-stop in celebrated toy shops across India. And now, the government has confirmed that almost 18500 toys were seized from Hamleys, Archies, and toy shops functioning inside airports and malls. The lack of a BIS quality mark proved costly for the famed toy shops including Hamleys owned by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance. Apart from the raid, the consumer protection regulator(CCPA) issued notice to big e-commerce websites such as Amazon and Flipkart to abide by the rules, that only permits the website to sell products with BIS quality mark.

“We received complaints from domestic manufacturers of sale of toys that do not conform with the BIS standard. We conducted 44 raids in last one month and seized 18,600 toys from major retail stores," BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari said in a press conference.

Not just big names, raids were also carried out inside malls and other small-scale shops from which many toys were seized. Maximum toys of about 9,000 were seized from Ahmedabad-based Raj Toy World, followed by 3,080 toys from Madurai-based Giftz, and 2,000 toys from Bengaluru-based Royal Mart and Chennai-based Kids Zone.
