KASARGOD: It has been one year and a mother is still awaiting the reason for her daughter’s death. But the chemical report associated with the death is still in the dark. The wailing tone from Devananda's mother has passed through many officials, but still no solace in the picture. Deavanada was food poisoned last year and succumbed to death the following day. The three chemical examination laboratories in Kerala work ineptly and house more than one lakh samples. Among this one lakh lies samples of pivotal cases that shocked the senses of Kerala. The technological impotence for a fast-track process results in more than a lakh samples piled up awaiting results in laboratories.
Police cases which include essential forensic samples and food poisoning cases are the main ones piled in laboratories in Trivandrum, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode districts. While unfurling highly complex cases, the viscera samples and other scientific findings are vital for making a judgment in court. In the three prominent labs across the state, 33 scientific officers and 31 technical assistants run the affair. Considering the current inept working of the labs, at least 40 officers are needed to cut short the workloads piling in the laboratories. More than 50000 samples related to human internal intestines are stacked up unnoticed in these incompetent laboratories of Kerala.
