KOCHI: The Puthuvype LNG terminal intended to meet the LNG demands of people in Kerala and Tamil Nadu will start commissioning by the end of March. The Rs 1,236 crore project has surpassed 96.1% completion. The project was delayed on multiple occasions due to sudden protests from localities and environmental activists. The commissioning of the jetty will reduce dependency on Mangaluru port for LPG supply. This will help avoid road movement of bulk LPG. The jetty will also be utilized for handling petroleum oil lubricant products, including bunker fuels. The Union ministry for environment and forests granted environmental clearance for the LPG terminal project in 2010.
The Indian oil corporation started the project in 2016. Due to protests and political activism, the project got a pitstop in 2017. The work resumed back in 2019 on December 16th. As per estimates, the terminal will get a financial earning of Rs 300 crore annually. The port meanwhile will see an earning of Rs 50 crores. After completion of the terminal, the LNG cylinders if booked will reach your home the very next day.
