The opposition entered the Legislative Assembly holding placards with grievances such as 'Blow to people's head' and 'State budget that is breaking the back of people'. When the question session started, they raised those placards and made a lot of noise, but it did not escalate.
After the question and answer session, the leader of the opposition stood up and announced the strike the public debate on the budget speech started. Shafi Parambil, Mathew Kuzhalnadan, Najeeb Kanthapuram, and CR Mahesh started a satyagraha in front of the assembly entrance against the imposition of the tax burden in the state budget. Some might have thought that the entire House would have come to a standstill yesterday after seeing the opposition furore that followed Finance Minister KN Balagopal's budget presentation on Friday. But the opposition is constructive. Therefore, they took the policy of participating in the MLAs' satyagraha strike at the entrance and taking part in the discussion inside to say what they had to say. This exercise by the opposition raised some doubts in KB Ganesh Kumar. If the finance minister reduces any tax at the end of the public debate, won't they say that it was given because they have fought for it? He suggested a precaution to prevent that credit from going that way. So if the finance minister wants to do something, do it by saying that it was done because the members of the ruling party asked so. Many in the ruling party condemned the opposition strike as anti-state. The opposition members also saluted.
Opposition leader VD Satheesan said that this budget is another calamity that has come down on the people like the epidemic and flood. He believes that unscientific tax proposals will derail the economy.
The Finance Minister clarified to the Leader of the Opposition that he does not want to leave the House after receiving personal applause. It was clear that he was grinding his loins. He read the statistics that the Pinarayi government had not raised taxes as much as they did during the Oommen Chandy regime. The finance minister lamented that the opposition did not feel like protesting against the Center levying a cess of Rs 30 per liter on petrol and Rs 27 per liter on diesel.
Deputy Speaker Chittayam Gopakumar, who started the public debate, shared the same sentiment as the Finance Minister. He also lamented the UDF's approach that even if the son dies, it is enough to see the daughter-in-law's tears. Ramesh Chennithala equated Pinarayi Sarkar to the wild cat in Panchatantramkatha, who disguised himself as a monk and tricked the sparrow and the rabbit to eat them. After seducing the people with his six o'clock speech, he took over the government and brought out his real color, Chennithala said. Xavier Chittilappilly said that the struggle going on outside is to betray the people of Kerala. Kadakampally Surendran joked that it was a food strike. Sajeev Joseph, PC Vishnu Nath, and others participated in the strike.
