DISPUR: Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio heaped appreciation towards the government of Assam for tailoring a master plan to stop the poaching of one-horned Rhinoceros from the famed Kaziranga national park. Considering his admiration for the upkeep of Kaziranga, the chief minister Himanta Biswa Sharma opened doors for the Hollywood star to pay a visit to Assam. The actor is an environmentalist and is used to praise and criticize governments in equal measure. A year back, Dicaprio landed in a quagmire after he criticized former Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro for failing to prevent the deforestation happening in the Amazons.

During the period of 2012, rhino poaching soared to a maximum making the species nearly go endangered. The plan was put in place and the government with resoluteness saw the poaching go down in the ensuing years. ''This triumph in India also comes with more good news, as @wwf also reports that the world population of the rare rhino soared to around 3,700 from about 200 at the turn of the 20th century,'' the actor added.

Assam's Kaziranga National Park located in the floodplains of the Brahmaputra river is the biggest habitat for one-horned rhinos globally and draws in visitors from across the globe.
