THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An accused, who was in remand, was found hanging in the Poojapura central prison. The deceased has been identified as Pothencode native Biju (47), who was arrested by the Attingal police in a theft case. The incident happened around 5.30 yesterday morning.
Biju, who was arrested by the Attingal police, had been remanded and lodged in the Attingal sub-jail. However, he was transferred to the isolation cell of the 12th block of Poojappura Central Jail on November 24, 2022, after it was confirmed that he was suffering from a contagious disease. On Friday morning, when the warden came for inspection, Biju was found hanging from the grill door of the cell. Although he was rushed to the hospital, he was declared dead at 6.20 am.
According to the police, Biju might have committed suicide due to depression. They said that Biju appeared worried and sad about his disease for a long time. It is believed that this led to suicide. Jail authorities said that Biju has no relatives. The Jail Superintendent said that there is no mystery in the incident.
