lithium

NEW DELHI: Setting the stage for a green energy revolution and a huge economic boom in India, 59 lakh tonnes of lithium deposits have been discovered in Jammu and Kashmir. Lithium is the main component of rechargeable batteries used in electric vehicles, mobile phones, and laptops. A large collection was found for the first time in the country in Salal-Haimana area of the Reasi district.

The Union Ministry of Mines announced that the Geological Survey of India has discovered lithium deposits in Jammu and Kashmir during four years of mineral exploration in various states. Such huge lithium reserves will make India self-sufficient in this sector as the world switches to electric vehicles to avoid the cost of petrol and diesel and to avoid pollution. Currently, lithium batteries are being imported from China, Japan, and Vietnam.

Exploration by the Geological Survey has identified 51 mineral blocks that include nickel, cobalt, and gold in addition to lithium. They were found in the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. 7897 million tons of coal and lignite deposits were also discovered.
