WAYANAD: A youth and CPM branch secretary has donated his kidney to a complete strange woman. The youth is identified as Manikandan (34), son of Rajendran of Cheeyambam in Wayanad and Maheswari. Manikandan donated his kidney to a 37-year-old woman of Payyoli in Kozhikode. The surgery was conducted on February 4.

Manikandan is the regional secretary of DYFI Irulam. You don't need to have any close relationship in order to save someone's life. Manikandan said that if you have a mind, you will be able to do anything. Manikandan came to the aid of the woman, a mother of two children deserted by her husband after both her kidneys stopped functioning. She is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Ernakulam after the surgery. Manikandan is resting at home.

Manikandan was preparing for the surgery for three months as per the instructions of the doctors. He was on diet and looked without getting sick. The surgery was scheduled for March 30, but as her health condition worsened, the surgery was preponed.

Manikandan gave consent for organ donation at a medical camp organised by the DYFI in 2014. He got a call eight months ago asking if he was ready to donate a kidney. After understanding the situation of the woman, Manikandan agreed. On examination, the kidney was matching her. However, his parents first refused. After much effort, they agreed and proceeded with legal procedures for the surgery.
