KOZHIKODE: Times have changed and so does vehicles. New gen autos like CNG and electric are on trend now, but everyone will look curiously at the goods autorickshaw bearing the number ‘KRD 3247’ and ask which model it is. Owner Vishwan is proud when he says that it is a 1980 model Lambretta. The 43-year-old auto still beats new gen autos with prefect running condition. The auto is a lifeline for Vishwan.

Many people have such old autos. But 73-year-old MN Viswan, a native of Elathoor, Kozhikode, says that there may not be another commercial vehicle as old as this with a permit. It can still carry anything like firewood, coconuts, stage decoration tools etc.

Viswan acquired goods auto which was ten years old at that time in 1990.

23 years ago, he we faced a crisis in renewing the permit, then Usha Titus, who was the Collector of Kozhikode at that time, helped him. He directly met the collector and expressed his grief. He told her that he does not know another job.

This petrol auto has an Italian Innocenti engine. Even if the mileage is low, it will still start in one kick. It still has insurance, tax and smoke test certificate are all included. There is no bar on renewal of permit due to fitness. The current permit is valid until next August. Viswan says that now he does not take up long distance trips due to his old age. Vishwan's wife is Vimala and their children are Rajil Raj, Rajesh and Subija.

The auto does not have a name yet. Viswan thinks of naming it 'Vismaya' as everyone stares in awe and takes photos. Auto was also lucky enough to be a part of Mohanlal's ‘Adwaitham’ film.

Rs 100 per day was the income received during the time he purchased the auto. Today he can earn up to 700 rupees, but because of less trips, he earns up to Rs 300.
