THRISSUR: Experts say that feeding only fodder instead of fiber-rich grass to cows that chew cud for at least eight hours a day can lead to disease and reduced milk production. Poor quality of fodder is also a problem. This can lead to food poisoning. If the content of fiber in the feed is reduced, liver disease, mastitis etc. will occur.

Cattle in Upper Kuttanad region had food poisoning the other day. Milk production also decreased by a quarter. The explanation of the fodder company was that the high protein content in the fodder caused diarrhea.

A balanced diet of 5.5 kg fodder and 25 kg grass can increase health and milk production for a 300 kg cow. If there is not enough grass, at least five kilograms of hay should be given daily. The amount of fiber in the feed should be ensured. Fiber can facilitate digestion. Digestion in cows takes place with the help of microorganisms like bacteria, protozoa and fungi.
